Vision on Design
I firmly believe in unification. To take complexity, bring its systems together, and create simplicity.
As a future designer, what world would I like to give shape? What do I believe in that will guide me?
In a world of continuous technological progress, I observe an increasing complexity. More products to choose from. More industries to keep track of. More information to process. This complexity can become overwhelming and cause a lack of clarity in one’s daily life. Complexity can also cause inefficiency, confusion and stress.
I believe that through unifying complex systems, a world can be created where behind the scenes there is complexity but the end users only experience simplicity. I believe that only through absolute overview of an industry, a whole understanding can be given shape. It is through understanding that we allow ourselves to change the industry most effectively, morally and radically. This in turn creates simplicity, comfort and optimal performance.
That is a world I believe in. A world that is simple not because of a fear of change in technology but because of technology. I envision a world where technology is so integrated that it becomes invisible. Where design is so pure that it doesn’t distract us from our day-to-day activities.
I made the picture above last summer. What I find beautiful about it, is that it’s timeless. You can’t see whether it was taken in the 20’s or now. And I want to participate in a world where this image could be taken a hundred years from now. A world where, despite our global endeavour for human progress and technological advancement, we never lose sight of a life wherein we can enjoy it’s simple beauty. Where we can sit by the beach under a blue sky and have a good laugh.
Professional Identity
Observer, explorer, team player, leader, philosopher, and entrepreneur.
If there is one thing I do all day, it would have to be observing. I carefully look around me and try to understand how systems work. This can be systems like the traffic, construction sites or entire societies. As ambitious as it might be, perhaps my biggest goal in life is to get an as complete world view as possible. This would allow me to know what people want and what the best course of action is.
I have an explorer mindset, ever since I can remember. I’ve tried things just to see what the outcome would be. I’ve done things just for the sake of doing it, like climbing up a hill to see what lies behind it. I think it’s through exploration that we get to places we never would have expected. And it are those places that are interesting for a designer.
I’ve learned from myself in the past year that one of my greatest strengths lies in bringing people together and steering them towards a common goal. If my dream job would exist, it would have that job description. Through my charisma, enthusiasm, pragmatism and dedication, I’ve been able to be a good team player and leader in the past and I hope to continue this into the future.
I’m a philosopher in the sense that I don’t just go through life, but take time to reason about it. I believe it to be through philosophy that we create ethical and well-argumented moral values for ourselves. Values I find to be essential for a good designer.
Ideas and designs are worthless when they are not implemented in society to be enjoyed. I’m an entrepreneur to realize the ideas that I have. One of my strengths is being a creator and taker of opportunities.
