HART - Human Augmentation Research and Technology

Team HART is an official student team of the Technical University of Eindhoven, founded in the summer of 2020. Team HART works on prototypes to augment humans by extending how people can perceive the world. We try to accomplish this by developing prototypes with haptic feedback that transmit information to the brain through the skin. I have been part of this team from the start and lead the business side of the team and the hardware developments of the prototype.

Technical explanation

How does human augmentation work? How can we expand how people perceive the world?
To explain this properly, one first has to understand a bit more about the workings of the human brain. The brain is essentially a black box that receives electrical signals from our senses. What’s interesting is that it doesn’t necessarily matter where these electrical signals come from, as long as the brain receives these signals often enough to interpret their meaning.

By making a sleeve that contains dozens of vibration motors that can vibrate in specific patterns, a vibrational language can be made on the arm that can eventually be understood by the brain. Once this language is established, we have the ability to attach sensors of any kind and transmit their measurements to the brain via our prototype. Imagine being able to feel distance, to see in infrared, to hear twice as well. The possibilities are endless.

The first application we will focus on with our prototype is that of language. The goal is to create a universal language through our prototype. The goal is that a person can speak to the user in any foreign language (Chinese for example), the prototype will pick up this speech, translate it in real-time, create the corresponding vibration patterns, which are then interpreted by the user. This way the user can understand any person on Earth in real-time.
